Verona - Walter Samuel scored on his Serie A debut for Inter to give the Nerazzurri a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a gritty Chievo side at the Bentegodi.

Four minutes into the second half the Argentine defender met Luis Figo 's inswinging corner from the left then powered a header past ex-Inter keeper Alberto Fontana.

It was third time lucky for Samuel, who twice headed wide from corners in the first half.

Captain for the evening Alvaro Recoba had a couple of chances to increase Inter's lead, blasting wide from a diagonal position before seeing a lob finish on the roof of the net.

The Verona victory puts Inter fourth behind Palermo, Fiorentina and Juventus in the Serie A table ahead of Sunday afternoon's Week 5 clash with the Viola at the Giuseppe Meazza.
